Robert Marsdenâs metal sculpture is defined by a rigorous and disciplined approach that concentrates on the inherent strength of engineered form, both structurally and visually. He is acutely aware of the implications of different methods of construction and the dynamics of size in offering the viewer a particular kind of experience.
In the early nineties his explorations of curvaceous objects, that were indicative of movement, gave way to a new set of concerns. Many subsequent works were bolted together, rather than invisibly soldered, and brought contrasting sensations of massiveness, inertia and permanence - whether tabletop sculptures or monumental out-door works. A more recent series of still-life compositions involves interactions between the cup form and quasi-architectural shapes. These elicit sets of competing impressions: monumental and human scales; stability and precariousness; emptiness and solidity.
