About

The Private View will be followed by an open discussion on contemporary drawing. Panel:Panel Robert Luzar/ Martin Lewis/Rob Van Beek What would it mean to use mark-making as a gesture to seizing an idea? Using a series of media, from print, to photography, film, and performance-based drawing works this exhibition employs the space as a place of examining performance-based drawing and its relationship to an activity of thinking. When there is no direct subject or object to these acts of investigation the elements that do appear are re-animated. A body in movement could imply a figure of a cosmological expanse, or a blur of smoke photo-synthesized on a wall. Wherever a performance-based drawing occurs in practice, the making bears more significant than the marks made. It is perhaps the body that becomes a vehicle for ‘drawing-out‘ the will to think the conditions of an operation of thought. Whatever marks that appear, each piece presents variations of the graphic motif: from the line of a bracket, to a grid, to a point made from pointing at nothing. One of the main concerns in this exhibitions is the question of whether exhibiting a thought without image, without object, or subject defeats the purpose of drawing-out any theme. What is left to the imagination is to speculate about a body that ‘figures‘; twisting, turning, enduring, but always emphasizing the body acts and moves as a form of bringing an approximation to an abstract notion of thought, that is inherent to the act of marking-out nothing.
