The New York artist Robert Longo (*1953) has been world-renowned since his first exhibition at the Metro Pictures gallery in 1981, where he presented the series ‘Men in the Cities’.

About

He has been honoured with retrospectives in numerous prestigious museums. In addition to Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Richard Prince, he is a protagonist of the ‘Picture Generation’ and one of the most political contemporary artists working in the field of drawing.

Longo completed his art degree at Buffalo State College, New York in 1975. In 1974, he became acquainted with fellow student Cindy Sherman, and in the following years he intensively explored the mediums of installation, performance as well as video art and photography. In 1995, he directed the film ‘Johnny Mnemonic’.

Today, Longo is particularly well-known for his monumental charcoal drawings, three of which will be on display in the gallery. They are accompanied by several studies, including one from the series ‘Men in the Cities’.

More than 30 prints by Longo will be presented in Kunst Lager Haas. This provides visitors with a unique opportunity to gain an overview of his comprehensive repertoire of motifs – waves, mushroom clouds, sharks, flags, tigers, or the impressive ‘Freud Cycle’, based on historical photographs of Sigmund Freud’s apartment and office.
