Robert Koenig's elaborately carved 'Memorial Structure', tackles themes of migration, loss, discrimination, fear and collective responsibility.
About
Robert Koenig has been carving wooden figures and reliefs for over 35 years. In 1996, after a research trip to his mother’s village in Poland he was inspired to carve Odyssey, a series of 42 larger-than-life wooden figures that have successfully toured to venues across the UK and Europe.
For his exhibition at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Robert will be making a major new piece of work especially for the church space. Taking the form of a memorial structure the installation will create a space for contemplation, recollection and reminiscence - decorated inside using differing techniques Robert has mastered over the past 35 years. Reliefs and sculptural carvings in his distinctive style will tackle themes of migration, loss, discrimination, fear and collective responsibility.
This new commission will be accompanied by a collection of Roberts existing sculptures and reliefs in the Link gallery.
Memorial Structure is supported by the National Lottery through funding from Arts Council England.
