BROADWAY 1602 UPTOWN is pleased and excited to present the work of Robert Anton, whose theater is one of New York’s best-kept secret avant-garde histories.
About
In the decade of performing his extraordinary microcosmic plays, Robert Anton (1949-84) has received the deepest admiration for his work and persona one could possibly put on record. His plays have spellbound and mesmerized an equally exquisite audience in New York and Europe, where Anton was praised as the new magus of the 1970s theatre avant-garde.
Meticulously sculpted heads, no larger than an inch and a half, with shockingly vivid features constituted this artist’s cast of “actors” throughout the 1970s. Anton was notoriously mysterious about his work, not allowing filming and limiting audiences at his performances to no more than eighteen spectators. BROADWAY 1602 has had the privilege of recording interviews with friends and colleagues who were fortunate enough to view his productions first hand and these historical documents add context and depth to this truly unique exhibition.
