Independent Dance present Robbie Synge's workshop 'Material Matters'
About
This workshop has its roots in Robbie’s studies and interest in physiological science and biomechanics. We begin by acknowledging the material nature of the body – its weight, structure and flexibility. The living, breathing body bound by established and defined processes that shift materials and alter conditions in order to maintain systems of different levels and functions.
A consideration of the body both as its own entity and in relation to our surrounding environment brings us to consider ecological systems. While all remaining thinking, decisive human-beings, we will work as much as we can with the forces that exist already to guide us in playful exploration. Gravity, the orientation of joints and distribution of weight, for example, will become parameters for sensation and observation of our own bodies, perhaps re-framing the familiar or finding an alternative fuel for body pathways and thinking.
Robbie Synge is a choreographer and performer based in Ross-shire, Scotland. Originally training in Physiology at Edinburgh University, Robbie was a semi-finalist in The Place Prize in 2012, and in 2014 was commissioned to create his most recent work Douglas through the respond_ project, a collaboration between Yorkshire Dance, Breakfast Creatives and the University of Leeds funded through the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts.
Level: For professional dance artists
