Rob Lowe, also known as Supermundane, uses line and colour to elicit human reactions to abstract works.
About
With Signs & Symbols, his largest show to date, the title hints at meaning that is often left ambiguous. Lines connect and intersect, confounding expectation and creating movement and depth. Colours are unashamedly bright and filled with optimism and life; often clashing.
A site-specific nine meter mural, painted using Lowe's visual language, will work with the interior architecture to define the space. Elsewhere, torn fragments of work will be rearranged in a large scale painting inspired by trips to the British museum and pieces of pottery displayed out of their original context. A new series of screen prints called 'Ancient Lights' will use four rectangles to hint at windows with simple lines used to create illusions of indoor and outdoor space.
'I want the work I make to have a physical effect on the viewer' Lowe says "I don't want to make passive work. The work is very graphic and hard edged but it is rooted in humans and what it is to be human."
This work celebrates a love of line and colour and how simple choices of composition can effect the way they are viewed:
"When planning these works a lot of time is spent adding and taking away lines and colours. The slight movement of one line or altering the colour of a single element can be the different between a piece working or not working."
