Turf Projects is delighted to present an exhibition of new work by Charlie Reed inspired by the River Wandle, from its source in Croydon to Wandsworth where it joins the River Thames.

About

On foot and by bike, Charlie has explored the length of the river. The exhibition presents the relationship between the cyclical natural world and the expanding and changing environment of the city – focusing on the diverging and intercepting paths of the river and transport routes, the opposing relationship between concrete and the uncultivated natural world, and moments of beauty experienced by the artist in this urban landscape.

The flowing water of the river is a constant in the ever-changing environment it dissects. Its natural path has been diverted by man-made structures to accommodate the infrastructure of the city. The juxtaposition between nature and the constructed landscape is explored by the artist through painting, printmaking, collage and drawing.

Much of the work in the exhibition was made in situ or developed from drawings and studies created alongside the river from direct observation.
