Forty new watercolour and mixed media paintings by the award-winning West Country artist Richard Thorn.
About
Richard Thorn is a highly regarded West Country artist, the Winner of the Schminke Award at the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour Exhibition 2016 and the prestigious John Purcell Award at the Royal Institute Open exhibition 2017. John Davies is delighted to welcome him back to the gallery with a new group of forty new watercolour and mixed media paintings.
The theme of the exhibition is ‘Night & Day’, with some of his works painted in moonlight as well as sunlight. For this show Thorn introduces a new body of work where the artist has been, in his own words, “playing around with composition to such a degree that there is no obvious focal point or ‘centre’”. The works create a dreamlike or memory narrative in a semi-surreal way that disconcerts the viewers who have to try to 'fill in the gaps' to create coherence. The narrative takes place in the viewer’s mind rather than in the painting.
"I am inspired by the seasons, the way light plays on the land and the sea. The effects of sunlight illicit an emotive response which I attempt to capture in my work." Richard Thorn
