Lasting echoes of 50s America photographed in vibrant saturated colours

About

There is a lot to like in 50s America; a world of slicked-back hair, souped-up cars and sexy, sassy, girls. The baby-boomers were coming of age and the post-war, cold-war, economy was in overdrive; a dynamic, go-getting, live-for-the-moment time of possibilities.
Richard Heeps photographs the lasting echoes of that world in images described by Kevin Jackson as having;
"delicious colours - rich, bright, mouthwatering colours" which best play up to the full blooded gorgeousness of subjects in front of his lens, whether it is the blazing orange flames painted onto the hood of a pinstriped '67 Dodge Coronet, the cool Hockney blues of Californian swimming pools in dazzling sunlight, the flagrantly factory-made red of a plastic deer, or the artfully made-up flesh tones of pretty girls in sharp period outfits.
The use of vibrant colour also invites comparisons to the work of Eggleston, Shore and Meyerowitz. All Heeps work is hand-printed from negative as C-type prints in full frame which gives the distinctive, ragged-edge, look.
Over a 20 year career he has exhibited widely including the Photographers Gallery and the Rencontres International at Arles. His books include include: Thurrock - A Different Light, FAST - Feasting on the streets of London, Mans Ruin and Rolled Out.
