Chalton Gallery is pleased to present the solo show by Rian Coughlan: Stripes, Shapes and Possibly Snakes.

About

Coughlan will be presenting a group of new paintings on canvas and board. As the title ‘Stripes, Shapes and Possibly Snakes’ alludes to, they mark a departure from his previous figurative work. Formal pictorial construction comes to the fore, proposing the painting’s object-hood as much as it’s identification as a model for the construction of meaning. However, the figure has not been removed completely. Instead figurative elements are sublimated into the process of construction, transformed to conform to the demands of the painting.

And, of course, there is always the possibility of snakes.
