This course aims to explore the richly diverse Art of Asia, while making reference to European Art. Drawing from sculpture, ceramics, fragments of textile and miniature paintings, participants will explore the differing formal approaches and cultural sensibilities of Asia and of Europe, and how ideas about space, about depiction and about making, echo and differ from each other across the world and across time. Observing fluidity and rhythm of line, understanding sculptural and pictorial spatial concepts and sensing stylistic shifts, sketches and sustained studies will be made using a variety of drawing materials, while attention is drawn towards the cultural context of these works. This course will be taught by two different tutors on alternate weeks, both of whom are practising artists with extensive experience of living and working in India.
