Between August 26th – 29th 2020, SomoS resident artists Karon Nilzén, Carlos Herraiz, and Marguerite Harris present their latest work in the REvisited group exhibition; an installation combining fabric and metal sculptures, light installation, video works, photography, and painting.

About

Besides a love of materiality, texture, and process, a shared tread involving memory and rediscovery unites the presented works. Be it the journey – sentimental or stylistic – to a former era or earlier version of oneself; the reappropriation of outdated media; the love of the aged, the decayed and the discarded; or the reclaiming of the ideals and expressions of past art- and social movements.

The past is not dead, its influence must be acknowledged, fought, or reappropriated if needed; this very current process is taking place on many levels today; personal, aesthetic, societal, and political. REvisited involves the viewer in a process of salvaging, reconsideration, reclaiming, and updating; squarely rooting the results in the present.

The show presents three artists whose work offers diverse and rewarding examples of this process. While Paris-based African-American artist Marguerite Harris excavates the idealistic traditions of Expanded Cinema, Squatter- and Club Culture from a Black and Media-art perspective, the discarded object-based sculptures and videos by multi-disciplinary Swedish artist Karon Nilzén take us on a personal quest through a less gentrified Berlin, in search of a former self. Finally, the “street-archeological” photography and abstract painting of Spanish Carlos Herraiz invite us to appreciate the processes of aging, decay, and memory.
