About
Rebecca Swainston's distinctive and fascinating work featuring figures, objects and animals, explore mind-body relationships through richly textured surfaces and strong narrative.
These thought provoking and expressive works, by an artist known for producing challenging and powerful images, explore the human psyche, the secrets, thoughts and actions we selectively reveal and conceal.
Rebecca's life time interest and research into our relationship and interaction with clothing and textiles forms the central theme for this exhibition. Clothing acts as a metaphor for the human psyche and we discover an emotionally charged undertow. The mind-body connection is explored in the work which delves into aspects of ourselves which we usually bypass and ignore.
Strong figures dominate and make their presence known to examine our understanding of and place in, the physical and natural world while lusciously painted animal forms expose and animate our human qualities, revealing us as we are and unlocking the elusive psychological aspects of the work.
'I have long been interested in the rituals, conventions and visual signs of our beliefs, social idiosyncrasies and the way we express them, consciously and unconsciously.'
Intense colour filled and seductive, these works leave a lasting impression and reward repeated viewing.
