Paintings inspired by a childhood spent in the Australian Outback.

About

Although Paula was born in the UK, her early childhood was spent within the vast and stunning Australian landscape.

Her family moved quite a lot over the years, which is something that continued into her adult life.  Her dream was to go back to Australia one day but life took her along different paths. She has travelled and lived in various countries but it wasn’t until two years ago that she finally returned to Australia. It felt as though she had gone home (spirituality at least).

This exhibition of work was inspired during and after that visit.

Paula has tried to capture some of the beauty and realism she experienced but also to evoke some of the childhood magic that is still alive in her memories.

Paula is inspired by so many things around her. Land and Seascapes, often with dramatic skies, are a constant source for her paintings. Sometimes it’s a specific location, other times they are representative of an experience held firm in heart and memory. She tries to capture some of the beauty and atmosphere that can evoke an emotion or the sense of calm contemplation often felt when we stand small in nature.

She uses oil paint on canvas and chalk pastels on coloured paper. The sizes vary from small pieces which are often studies to very large paintings which can be ongoing projects that can take years to complete.

"I love every aspect of the creative process. As a painting begins to evolve, my conscious thinking stops and is replaced by more of an intuitive flow, an interplay connecting  materials and mind. Sometimes it can feel like a meditation and at other times it’s as though some kind of magic is happening."

You can meet Paula at the gallery on Sunday 9th February between 12 and 6pm and on Sunday 23rd February when she will give a short talk about her work around 2pm.

Following the tragic bushfires in Australia, Paula will be donating 25% of the proceeds of any sales from these artworks to charities that are supporting the victims of the fires.
