About
Art16 returns to Olympia London from 20 – 22 May 2016. Since our inaugural edition in 2013, Art16 has become a highlight of London’s cultural calendar, kicking off the summer season with a compelling edit of international artists and galleries from more than 30 countries from around the globe.
The Fair will present over 1000 outstanding artworks from artists and galleries from every continent, maintaining our unique commitment to showcasing exciting emerging talent alongside established contemporary artists.
Coburn Projects is delighted to present at ART 16 London a series of recent works on paper by RETNA.
Retna’s unmistakable aesthetic and style integrates appropriated contemporary graffiti, traditional painting as well as a unique glyphic expression. Emerged as one of the most prolific street/graffiti artists in the contemporary art world, Retna (Marquis Duriel Lewis) also appears in many institutions and gallery exhibitions worldwide for example the store front for Louis Vuitton in Miami or a mural at MOCA in Los Angeles, Retna develops paintings and works on paper that express a similar unique text-based style.
The artist uses a range of various ancient writing cultures, whether Arabic, Persian, Hebrew or Native American which he then translates into a dynamic and personal alphabet and interpreted as architectural parts of temples and mosques. Though his marks resemble the calligraphy of multiple cultures, the writing does not belong to a particular language. Retna explains, “I want my text to feel universal. I want people from different cultures to all find some similarity in it—whether they can read it or not.”
