Collages by artist and musician LESTER SQUARE
LESTER SQUARE emerged from the melting pot of what Pete Frame called ‘The Art School Dance’ of the 1970s to forge a career in both music and art. At Hornsey Art School, with Adam Ant, Viv Albertine, Heidi Berry, John Ellis, Gina Birch et al, he cut his musical teeth as a founding member of Adam and the Ants and The Monochrome Set.
The exhibition is a collection of works which bring together images of transcendence with resonant images of humanity’s darker side. The body of work was inspired by SQUARE’S own subconscious visions which appeared to him before a Grand Mal Seizure in 2013.
‘Disturbing as it was for those around me, I have no memory of the seizure itself. However, the warning ‘aura’ has haunted and fascinated me in equal measure since. Described by neurologists as an extreme sense of déjà vu, this mental storm lasted only a few seconds before unconsciousness and seemed much more malevolent than that description would indicate. In that moment, the world turned upside down and the déjà vu effect convinced me that all things, animate and inanimate, were connected: all events and all time had conspired to cause my demise.’
To describe the dark, conspiratorial interconnectedness he experienced. SQUARE uses newspaper cutting, photocopied material and images of famous artworks combining them with printmaking techniques and collage .
In the field of fine art, LESTER SQUARE teaches, writes on art education and continues to work in both figurative and non-figurative styles.
He has been acclaimed for his record sleeve designs and has had many prestigious commissions including public sculpture, theatre designs and collaborative performances with other artists such as the Arts Council sponsored INTERPLAY performance art group.
