About
Famed jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson celebrates the second night of her Roulette residency with a debut performance from the new trio comprised of Ambrose Akinmusire, Craig Taborn, and Halvorson.
From humble beginnings in Oakland, California to a guest spot on Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed album To Pimp A Butterfly, Ambrose Akinmunsire’s has enjoyed a meteoric rise to jazz stardom. The winner of two of the most prestigious jazz competitions in the world -- the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition -- Akinmunshire has released three albums great critical acclaim.
Hailed by DownBeat as "one of the visionaries of the current wave,” Minneapolis-born pianist Craig Taborn has collaborated fellow jazz legends with Gerald Cleaver and James Carter. An improvisational pianist with a modular approach, Taborn released his second album, Chants, in April 2013 on ECM Records.
Guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson has been called “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). Halvorson is perhaps best known for her longstanding trio featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith and more recently for her solo guitar project, Meltframe. Halvorson is also an active member of bands led by Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, Trevor Dunn, Tomas Fujiwara, Ingrid Laubrock, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Mike Reed and Marc Ribot, among others.
