*The gallery will be closed on Monday 19 September for the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Since its inception in 2009, RSA Residencies for Scotland has awarded over £313,000 to 106 artists at 29 venues across Scotland. This artist-led scheme enables a valuable period of research, development and production for visual artists at all stages of their careers, whilst forging important links with centres of excellence across Scotland.

The RSA William Littlejohn Award annually awards £2,000 to artists working in water-based media. To date, the fund has dispersed a total of £28,000 to 14 artists who have pushed the boundaries of this medium.

The Royal Scottish Academy maintains a unique position in Scotland as an independent, self-funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose sole purpose is to promote and support contemporary Scottish art. In addition to our exhibitions programme, a fundamental role of the RSA is the developmental support of artists towards the creation of new work. Together with partner funders we annually disburse over £300,000 worth of funds to artists and architects at all stages of their careers, through the sales of works, monetary awards, scholarships and residencies. Additionally, our partners play host to a wide range of engaged and supportive assistance including technical access, studio memberships, networks and exhibitions.

We would like to extend thanks to the exhibiting artists, the host venues and the Barns-Graham Charitable Trust for their continued cooperation and support.

In 2021, a new Bequest was gifted to the Royal Scottish Academy from the Estate of Mrs Jay Gordon Smith. The W Gordonsmith and Jay Gordon Smith Bequest will give additional support to the RSA Residencies for Scotland programme. The first recipients of this new bequest have already been selected and are beginning their research this summer.
