The title of the exhibition, the term “Rescate”, means “rescue” in Spanish, but also “ransom”. We translate it as REDEMPTION, as her work is both about providing solutions in the sense of detaching from nature, as well as redeeming from this unnatural position. Like in an actual revelation, she welcomes the awareness of nature, enraptured and yet true. She conveys this by employing an optical trick: she uses a transparent base for her paintings, a technique known as “painting behind glass” in sacred spaces.

Her bases are startlingly and obviously contemporary: mobile phone displays and laptop screens. On these she paints motifs of trees and greenery, fleeting as shadows or as a lofty breeze. Her gaze catches the light and weaves it into images, which she releases into free fall. The motifs change with the movement. The smooth surfaces are irksome and allow new images to flare up. It is positively visible that reality is derived from action. Like in a mirror that reflects itself a space without shadows opens up, reaching into boundless emptiness.

The artist, as her full name indicates, comes from different cultures. She lives in Berlin. She studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee from 2013 to 2019 and received the Mart Stam Förderpreis in her final year.

Der Begriff ‚Rescate‘ als Ausstellungstitel (engl. Rescue) hat im Spanischen die Bedeutung von Rettung, aber auch Lösegeld. Wir übertragen es als ERLÖSUNG, weil es in Paula Carraleros Arbeit tatsächlich um die Lösungen im Sinne von „Abtrennung“ aus der Natur, wie auch gleichzeitig um die Erlösung aus dieser widernatürlichen Position geht. Wie eine tatsächliche Offenbarung empfängt sie die Erkenntnis der Natur, entrückt und doch wahrhaftig. Sie vermittelt dies, indem sie sich eines optischen Tricks bedient: der Malerei auf transparentem Grund, bekannt als Hinterglasmalerei in sakralen Räumen.

Ihre Arbeitsgrundlagen sind verblüffend wie naheliegend zeitgemäß: Handy-Displays und Laptop-Bildschirme. In diese malt sie Motive von Bäumen und Gräsern, flüchtig wie Schatten und luftiges Wehen. Ihr Blick fängt das Licht auf und webt es zu Bildern, entlässt sie in ein freies Schweben. Die Motive ändern sich mit der Bewegung. Die glatten Oberflächen irritieren und lassen neue Ansichten aufblitzen. Man sieht förmlich, dass Wirklichkeit abgeleitet ist von wirken. Wie in einem Spiegel, der sich selbst reflektiert, öffnet sich ein Raum ohne Schatten, greift in grenzenlose Leere.

Die Künstlerin stammt, wie ihr vollständiger Name verrät, aus verschiedenen Kulturen. Sie lebt in Berlin. Studiert hat sie von 2013 bis 2019 an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee und im Abschlussjahr den Mart-Stam-Förderpreis erhalten.
