About
Rene Burri is a seminal figure in the world of photography. A longtime member of the prestigious Magnum agency, he is responsible for some of the most iconic images of our age, yet there has not previously been a major retrospective of his work in the UK. This exhibition is a celebration of his remarkable and adventurous oeuvre, and coincides with a major public exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery.
Burri was born in Zürich in 1933. The story of his career is the story of the second half of the twentieth century. His curiosity and humanity got him almost unrestricted access to the major events and personalities of the last fifty years; his work is a fascinating personal account of the major artists, politicians and personalities of this age. He is admired and respected by his peers for his telling and cerebral photo-essays, and social documentaries and commentaries made with a characteristically sympathetic eye and an ability to capture larger-than-life personalities.
