Regions of Light showcases the work of painter and poet Rev John Eagles (1783-1855) together with contemporary pieces by multi-media artist Rebecca Chesney, painter Paul Desborough and photographer Jem Southam.
About
Jem Southam is renowned for his patient observation of changes at a single location over many months or years. Here we present traditional large format camera images that record high levels of detail alongside stunning new digital images depicting the passage of winter. Rebecca Chesney’s projects take the form of installations, interventions, drawings and maps and walks that are specific to chosen locations. ‘Snapshot’, a colour chart, visualises the many layers of a landscape whilst ‘Hope’s Whisper’ explores the influence the weather had on the life and works of the Brontë sisters.
Paul Desborough’s paintings explores the formal limits of painting and its relationship to art’s historical canons such as Poussin. Similarly Rev John Eagles, a first cousin of Miss Warre of Hestercombe, studied the works of Poussin and painted at Hestercombe in the early 1800’s. Eagles felt that painting should be about escapism, he wrote: 'Landscape...should be a poetical shelter from the world'.
