In her sparse, peaceful still life paintings, Porter strips away any distraction to capture the essence of light as it falls on her subject and its surroundings. Making observations directly from life, she at once is both inspired and limited by the ever-changing seasons. A strong emphasis is given to simple elegant composition and the subtle gradations of colour temperature within a limited muted palette. These narrow parameters allow her to delve deeper towards the play of light, shadow, focus and line — seeking their absence and presence within the frame. Porter studied at Central Saint Martins and paints from her gently-lit studio in Brixton. Her work literally reflects a quiet tranquil escape from the crowded frenetic noise of the city. The still - often solitary — object; at peace, basking in uncluttered space.
