About
'reflecting on networks / artistic strategies using the web' looks at opportunities and conditions for artistic activity in the digital age. Key emphasis is placed on the significance attached to the use of media technologies in the various works. Whether as a means of communication or research, or as an interactive platform or technological system, the various functions of digital media can be seen alongside the range of artistic strategies. On display are works by artists, who deal with societal, social and political changes in a technological and data-oriented world. Topics include the altered perception of space, privacy and ownership through the everyday use of electronics, as well as the transformation of information through search engines, social media platforms and video portals. Other works focus on the interactivity between man and machine; between the user and sophisticated information processing systems, which have today become an integral part of everyday life.
The artists take a critical approach to the web-media process of regulating user interfaces on the internet through restrictions and control mechanisms. Through the user's participation in the creation of many works, a two-way relationship emerges between the artist and recipient. The sole authorship of the artist is called into question. As part of the evolving possibilities of digital manipulation, the validity of a work of art can also be influenced - this means the question concerning originality of the same takes on a new dimension.
