'Reflect – A Ray of Hope' documents the creation of a human art installation on the USA/Mexico border promoting peace, tolerance and unity, by Bristol artists Duncan McKellar and David Martin. It features 100 people, one Kilometre, one border and one sun. First U.K. screening for one night only.
About
When Donald Trump was elected President of the United States using an election promise to build a new and heavy fortified wall along the USA / Mexico border, Bristol-based artist Duncan and graphic designer David had an idea. It was an idea that would take them all the way to the border towns of Douglas, Arizona and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico in January 2018 to stage an audacious art event that aimed to demonstrate the power of people working together, using something that we all share, wherever we live in the world: the sun. It was an idea that would eventually lead them to Washington DC.
Reflect featured 50 Americans and 50 Mexicans standing together as one, in a perfectly straight line stretching for one kilometre. Participants wore mirrored masks that in the desert sun flashed a pathway of light across the wall. Two countries, a stunning moment of togetherness and a defiant challenge to those whose aim is to divide us, wherever we live, at one of the most iconic and politically toxic dividing lines of them all.
Crowdfunded and made by first time film makers, ‘Reflect - A Ray of Hope’ is a fascinating 30 minute documentary that follows the Bristol duo and their team as they aim to bring the idea to life under the ever watchful eye of US Border Patrol.
The screening will take place exactly one year after installation was staged. Doors open 6pm, the screening will start promptly 7pm. The 30-minute film will be followed by the opportunity to meet the artists with Q&A discussion and informal chat until 9pm. Ticket includes first drink.
