About

A pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, artist and technologist Refik Anadol is known for his innovative media works and large-scale public installations. For his first major institutional solo exhibition in the UK, Anadol creates digital artworks that unfold in real-time, continuously generating new and otherworldly forms that envelop viewers. Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive presents the artist’s years-long research utilising ground-breaking data visualisations and machine learning methods to encourage visitors to rethink our engagement with the physical world, collective experiences, public art, decentralised networks, and the creative potential of AI.

The exhibition features the UK premiere of Living Archive: Nature, a new commission conceived specially for Serpentine North. The installation wraps the gallery walls in AI generated images of the rainforest, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in virtual spaces inspired by data of flora and fauna from over 16 rainforest locations globally, which was collected using technologies such as LiDAR, photogrammetry, and capturing ambisonic audio. At the crossroads of visual art, science, and technology, Anadol also presents Artificial Realities: Coral, a multi-channel sound and video experience highlighting the vital role of coral reefs in the ocean ecosystem. Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive investigates the ways in which technology alters our perception of the natural world and experience of time and space.
