Between November 2019 and May 8th 2023 Sarah Hartnett and Lucy Stein are undertaking a pilgrimage along the Mary ley line which runs from near Lands’ End in Cornwall to Hopton in Norfolk. Much esoteric literature has been written about the Michael line but the Mary line remains a shadowy enigma. The Michael line is said to represent the 'logical route' across hilltops and airy vistas, whereas the Mary line is circuitous and flighty, watery and nurturing. She runs along fecund gullies and damp valleys, and at points of intersection with Michael the power generated therein suggests a relation to Jung's idea of the Anima/Animus: a problematic yet generative guiding text for us on our journey. One such place of power is Boscawen'Un stone circle, another is the ghost of Didcot power station.

Lucy (b. Oxford) is a painter based in St Just in West Cornwall. Her interest in magical practice and ritual invests the atmospheres in her paintings and performances with a dark charge. She is fascinated by the ever changing texture of reality, and how hormones and particulars of mood can affect being in the world.

Sarah (b. Sussex) is an artist studying for a Masters in Social Anthropology at SOAS in London. Her research is based on place, affect and social memory.

"Our aim is to emancipate our experience of the sites along the Mary line from previous dowsers and activate new knowledge pathways."

RE-ENACTMENT continues a series of events and manifestations from the Mary ley line pilgrimage. Previous projects include Spirit of the Hedgerow in The Game at Anchor Studios, Newlyn (2021) and Tongues of Time at Villa Romana Florenz (2021), Florence, Italy, as well as contributions to Nervemeter and The Enquiring Eye.
