Recent work by Brian and Gill Tandy

In July we will welcome Brian and Gill Tandy for a selling exhibition of their recent works in the Granary Art Gallery. Currently living in the side of Brown Clee Hill, in south Shropshire, Gill Tandy takes her inspiration from the geological structures of the surroundings. Her work has always engaged with movement, the contours and change in the landscape. Her latest work contains both figurative and abstract elements, allowing the work to rise at will, free from prescribed categories. Gill's intention is to translate Clee Hills, Corvedale and Wenlock Edge into painted compositions, sometimes applying gloss paint in a specific and controlled manner, and at other times acting freely to achieve a loose expression. Artists of the 20th century whose work is free from specific alignment such as the Spanish painter Joan Miro and the Abstract Expressionists have influenced Gills work. Since achieving a BA First class honours in Fine Art from Wolverhampton College of Art, followed by Post Graduate study at Chelsea school of Art, Gill has had a career lecturing in art and design in Further Education and has completed an MA in Painting at the University of Wolverhampton. She has also been involved in many art shows in the West Midlands and in Oxfordshire. Gill's husband Brian's recent body of work consists of large oil paintings which have arisen from a move to live permanently on Brown Clee. His paintings are influenced by the landscape and are a subjective response to the way our eyes focus on a scene taking in parts as well as the whole. Brian explores the qualities of oil paint such as colour, surface texture and gestures to demonstrate the curve of a lane, texture of fields and shadows cast. The movement and rhythm of the landscape can be clearly seen in his dynamic paintings. Brian has extensive experience lecturing in Fine Art in the West Midlands and was Head of Foundation Studies at Walsall College of Arts and Technology. A committed painter and printmaker, he has been involved in various mixed shows throughout the region. In addition, Brian also has work in private collections and undertook The Three Bridges Steel Sculpture commission on the Black Country Route in 2004.
