About

‘Rebellion, Regeneration and Community' is an exhibition hosted and devised by the second year Fine Art students at The Bristol School of Art. On the 10th and 11th of March 2023 the group will be taking over the exhibition space at The Island on Nelson Street in central Bristol, the site of the old Bridewell Police Station, to showcase work influenced by the historic environment, institution and context of the building, both in its former and current form. The site and the building has a long, rich and varied history dating back hundreds of year and is now run as a community space for artists.  Each of the artists has responded to this history and context in their own individual way and the exhibition will include a wide range of styles and media including paint, print, digital and ceramics.

The gallery is run by Artspace Lifespace a Registered Charity that

recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving

creative resources and vibrant multi-use art venues. Working with communities and engagement is at the heart of what they do.

The theme of the exhibition is intended to celebrate the history of the

venue and be sympathetic to the to the ethos and the work of the charity.

Exhibited artists:

Liv Brunt, Anita Czerwinska, Connor Gard, El Alma Ache, Grace

Grimmett, Aggie Homer, Tom Newman, Jeanette Read, Eliza Benefield,

Belle Treise, Jay Whitby.

Bristol School of Art at Queens Road (part of SGS College) is situated in the right-hand wing of the Royal West of England Academy, and offers degree level, foundation, part-time, and community degree art courses.
