these paintings are recorded observations of natural light moving across the surfaces of ancient chinese pottery. the title alludes to the subtle spaces between hues and to the passage of time between events.
the paintings explore an interface between materiality: the physicality of paint, the ceramic surface through which the skilled and delicate touch of the maker remains visible, and the lesser material qualities of light, space, and cyclical time.
the craft, tradition and aesthetic that are embedded in these objects are echoed in the paintings in the application of translucent glazes onto an earth ground. contemporary media and processes are used to form painted surfaces which are quietly reductive and which slowly reveal their own history
