Rebecca Ackroyd, 'Gross Weight'

About

Talented young artist Rebecca Ackroyd explores the relationship between sculpture and drawing. Her work displays an interest in form and decoration, while demonstrating a concern for material qualities and graphic composition.

She takes utilitarian objects, maintaining their modular and monochromatic features, but rethinking their material characteristics to evoke alternative structures of feeling. Hard, cold metal shapes are rendered as outlines, cut into softly draping sheets of felt, or recreated in a series of ambiguous resin and graphite casts. These post-minimal transformations have an enigmatic presence, existing somewhere between representation and abstraction, the literal and the metaphorical.

Rebecca Ackroyd (b. 1987) studied Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art (2007 -2010) and is currently a postgraduate student at the Royal Academy Schools, London. Her most recent exhibitions include: Material Matters, The Drawing Room off-site project at UBM HQ, SE1 (2012); Magnitude - Real Gold Event, 19 - 23 Kingsland Road, E2 (2012); Odds Against Tomorrow, Bearspace, SE8 (2012); The Face of the Shape, La Scatola Gallery, EC2 (2011); Print Now, Bearspace, SE8 and SW1 Gallery (both 2011).
