As part of the public programme for Wu Tsang’s exhibition "There is no nonviolent way to look at somebody" a series of intimate reading groups offer the opportunity to collaboratively discuss texts which are crucial to Tsang’s work.
About
In the preface to Fred Moten and Stefano Harney’s book "The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study" (2013) Jack Halberstam defines the term “study” as “a mode of thinking with others separate from the thinking that the institution requires of you”. This way of being and working together underpins Tsang’s artistic practice and the notion of “study” is a key reference in many of her works. The reading groups will provide a space where a collaborative reading practice can be shared.

Kathy-Ann Tan is a curator and independent scholar. Her current research project aims to collaboratively build a forum for artists and curators to develop ways of interrogating colonial narratives.
Natasha Ginwala is an associate curator at the Gropius Bau. Together with Defne Ayas she is the artistic director of the forthcoming Gwangju Biennale 2020.
Wu Tsang was the first artist to be the Gropius Bau’s "In House: Artist in Residence". Between 4 September 2019 and 12 January 2020 her exhibition There is no nonviolent way to look at somebody will be on display on the first floor.
