The art retreat in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland is run by 'Wild at Art' and painter Kate Cunningham at the 13th century arts center and historic house Hospitalfield. The retreat includes 6 days of artist-led painting workshops with painter Kate Cunningham.
Painting the sky and clouds are Scottish artist Kate Cunningham's specialty and one of the main workshop themes. Through plein air painting sessions and studio workshops, Kate will guide you through the creative process of really seeing your surroundings, help you develop a personal artistic interpretation, and enrich your technique with new perspectives on color, light and shade.
You will discuss different artists and their styles, the pros and cons of working en plein air vs. from a photograph, working alla prima (wet on wet), some basic meteorology and the importance of experiencing the atmosphere elements you are trying to convey in a painting. Kate will teach you how to start a painting and how to use a view-finder to create the perfect composition.

Throughout your art retreat, you will paint en plein air in some of the wonderful locations in and around Hospitalfield House. You will also head to Arbroath Cliffs and the beach front to practice some plein-air painting.
You will spend the rest of your time working in the studio using the painted sketches and photographs taken at the coast or simply exploring the stunning Hospitalfield House and its gardens. The painting retreat is adapted for a wide range of levels, with participants doing as much or as little sketching and painting as they wish.
