The Group show “RE-” spans video, photography, sculpture, performance, and installation, presenting viewers with a multi-disciplinary investigation into re-enactment in the field of contemporary art. Curated by Nicole Beck.
About
Re-constructions of history and memory in the field of contemporary art are innately subjective – sitting somewhere between factual and fictional, archival and imagined, accurate and inaccurate. These creative re-creations aim not to be truthful to the past, but rather, truthful to the present. What is revealed, unlocked, and transformed through such personalized re-imaginations of history? How can re-creating our past, help us to better understand our present?
These are the questions that curator Nicole Beck asks in the upcoming group exhibition “RE-“. This show seeks to illuminate the power of artistic re-creation in forging new pathways toward critiquing and healing past experiences. Through physical embodiment and material manipulation, exhibited artists repossess stolen stories, mend open wounds, and discover personal truths.
Nicole invites viewers of “RE-“ to consider what is unlocked through processes of re-creation - for both the creator and viewer.
Organized by Nicole Beck during her Curatorial Residency at SomoS.
