About

Galerie Suvi Lehtinen is pleased to present Radiating Image, an exhibition of recent work by Marjatta Oja and her first solo exhibition in Berlin. The show will consist of photographs, videoprojections and related objects by Oja and runs from April 28, 2012 to May 26, 2012. "An image is only an image of something. Someone views an image through the eyes of one's mind and wants to construct this vision. What happens in reality, can we even view the real world or must we trust intuition? Or what is a reconstruction of reality made out of image and images? And can built reconstructions transfer a thought, can they be used for communication?" The works in Radiating Image differ from each other, although are connected to the same historical moment - a time when photography was gaining popularity and moving images created scenes of wonder for their viewers. The image a camera produced was a constructed trick, something to be deservedly proud about as a great feat for mankind in the early 20th century. Oja ponders the position of the image in her life right now. The artist recognises her combined admiration and horror, her understanding as well as doubts when faced with the image. "The image has taken over a large chunk of my life even though it is only a trick." A similarly widespread achievement of mankind is electricity. Oja combines image with radiation that can be intuited and felt on one's skin, but the true substance of which cannot be seen. Marjatta Oja is a Finnish artist living and working in Helsinki. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in many european group exhibitions. Oja's work appears in the collections of Moderna Museet, Stockholm and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, among others.
