Mosaic is the medium of choice for artist and singer/songwriter/activist Rachel E Reader’s debut exhibition at Colonnade House.

About

Mosaic tiles offer an endless range of permutations and Rachel’s versatility as an artist is demonstrated through her exploration of the tile’s textures, sizes, colours and thicknesses. Rachel describes the process as:

“A wonderful way to tap into one’s innate creative abilities, drawing out of yourself something completely unique that has never existed before, bringing life and vibrancy to objects that were once dull, colourless and boring”

However, being selective about the type of tiles used is of the utmost importance to Rachel as each choice brings a range of different looks, hues, moods and expressions to the artwork depending how the light shines on them. The use of iridescent, frosted tiles and mirrors in Rachel’s work is particularly exciting, creating eye-catching and absolutely stunning visual effects.

Rachel has been enamoured with art since childhood and has always enjoyed visiting museums and art galleries. As a self-taught artist, she has honed her own style over the years, taking inspiration from nature as well as a variety of painting styles, particularly impressionism, drawing on the use of bold and bright colours in her work.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is the large wall mirror titled ‘From Brokenness to Beauty’ which Rachel feels is “a subconscious expression” of her journey from the devastating, traumatic and painful events of her past to now arriving at a place of wholeness, healing and restoration where she is able to reflect light, love, joy and beauty from her life, artwork and music to others.

She believes that the mirror represents a message of hope to others that nothing is beyond redemption and that it is possible for something beautiful to eventually come out of the shattered and broken parts of our lives if we hold onto our faith and belief in the inherent good.

As a singer/songwriter, Rachel is currently in the process of completing her third album.
