About
‘Questions of Travel’ presents a selection of work responding to Elizabeth Bishop’s 1965 poem. Through drawing, painting, collage, photography and ceramics, the exhibition explores the poem’s unresolved tension between the exotic nature of travelling abroad and the rootedness of homeland:
Continent, city, country, society:
the choice is never wide and never free.
And here, or there... No. Should we have stayed at home,
wherever that may be?
United in their considerations of home, memory and a timeless sense of place, the participating artists demonstrate a range of aesthetic responses. Abstract works are rooted in past experiences. Figurative paintings consider exploration, foreignness, solitude or the meaning of home. Ceramic objects can be both domestic and worldly. Nature-inspired works address the human desire to 'see the sun the other way around.'
We are delighted to be presenting the exhibition in collaboration with the Marie Jose Gallery. There will be a Private View with the artists on 6 June and an Artists’ Talk on 8 June.
