Saturday 3rd - Queer Trash Cinema Club presents ....

Lucia Fulci ‘s New York Ripper (1982)
&
Katt Shea’s Stripped to Kill (1987)

New York Ripper 1982:
A blade-wielding psychopath is on the loose, turning The Big Apple bright red with the blood of beautiful young women. As NYPD detective Fred Williams (Jack Hedley of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY) follows the trial of butchery from the decks of the Staten Island Ferry to the sex shows of Times Square, each brutal murder becomes a sadistic taunt. In the city that never sleeps, the hunt is on for the killer that can't be stopped.

New York Ripper is so subversive that it was banned outright on its first foray onto our shores : the print of Ripper, due for U.K. censors (BBFC) inspection, was legendarily escorted back to the border by the Police without ever being screened .

Stripped to Kill ( 1987) :

Stripped to Kill a Roger Corman film by Katt Shea is a film about when Detective Cody Sheehan discovers the body of a stripper from the Rock Bottom dance club, she wants the case. Her partner, Detective Heineman, is equally anxious to make the jump to the prestigious homicide division, but the only way Cody can get the assignment is to go undercover - uncovered - at the club.
This was filmed in a proper club using real strippers to play strippers . Katt Shea gave these women acting lessons in her living room . It took her a year to convince Roger Corman to make this film .

Expect blood and gore in both of these films . We have picked them because they are personal favourites . We appreciate them for their camp value ... plus the twist in stripped to Kill is boss ! Viewer discretion is advised. Not for prudes or people easily offended . They are of their time and that is why we like them.

Sunday 4th
Wigstock : The Movie (1995)
&
Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996)

Wigstock : The Movie (1995)

Wigstock the movie is a documentary film about The Lady Bunny’s festival of the same name that was held in Newyorks east village in the 80s and 90s . This documentary highlights a number of performances from the 1994 festival including : Crystal Waters, Deee-lite, Jackie Beat, Debbie Harry, Leigh Bowery and Joey Arias . It also captures a performance by the now legendary Rupaul as well as the legendary Lypsinka . It also takes a look behind the scenes, examining the process of a number of the performers including lypsinka and the Wigstock Dancers feat a young Candis Cayne . It also gives a glimpse of old New York with Patrica Fields old shop . Attendees are interviewed about their experiences at the festival and performers are interviewed about the importance o drag and transgressive gender expression in their lives.

The Watermelon Woman (1996)

Cheryl Dunye ( who wrote , directed and edited the film) takes the lead as a young, Black, lesbian working in Philadelphia with her best friend Tamara who becomes consumed by a film project: to make a video about her search for a Black actress from Philly who appears in films of the 30s and was known as the Watermelon Woman. Following various leads, Cheryl discovers the Watermelon Woman’s stage name and real name and surmises that the actress had a long affair with Martha Page, a white woman and one of Hollywood’s few female directors. As she’s discovering these things, Cheryl becomes involved with Diana, who’s also white . The affair strains Cheryl’s friendship with Tamara. More discoveries bring Cheryl ( and us, the audience) to new realisations.

This film was reviewed as containing “the hottest dyke sex scene ever recorded on celluloid” . This was picked up by Julia Duin for the Washington Times questioning the grant given to Duyne by the NEA(National Endowment for the Arts) to make the film . This lead to republican Peter Hoekstra sending a letter to NEA chairwoman Jane Alexander highlighting that The Watermelon Woman like several other gay and lesbian themed works that taxpayers money is being used to “fund the production and distribution of patently offensive and possibly pornographic movies “. He also stated that he had no problem with the gay content just the explicit sex . Because of this controversy the NEA only awards grants to specific projects, rather than giving funding straight to art groups for disbursment .

As well as the double features there will be musical interludes by Alec Tronik and Lady Bird , as well as time for discussion of the themes presented in the films at the end of the screening
