“In my mind, home is a place where gender and sexuality are realms of joy and possibility, not prisons defined by societal limitations and shame.” - Tony Whitfield
About
In QUEER HOME SWEET HOME, Tony Whitfield explores what the idea of “home” can mean to LGBTQ young people as they formulate understandings of who they are in the world. QUEER HOME SWEET HOME extracts material from his own experience and expands this discussion, reflecting upon the home life experiences of a wide range of LGBTQ. Underscoring Whitfield’s first hand experience of queer youth, other works in this exhibition draw upon interviews and focus groups that culminated in a Queer Home Sweet Home Manifesto, developed in 2014 with the support of a Local Arts Grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council.
Queer Home Sweet Home is a project of Whitfield CoLabs through which Whitfield collaborates with artists, designers, and others to explore social transformation in urban environments.
