Ringing in the first of 2015’s G-SHOCK ‘Art Sessions’ in collaboration with the Urban Nerds Collective, graphic designer and artist Luke Merryweather presents ‘Quarter Lyfe Crisis’ – launching the installation of prints, paintings, plants and peculiars with a private view on Brick Lane on Thursday 5th February.
‘Art Sessions’ is a series of free parties and exhibitions that has seen the G-SHOCK East Store road-blocked month after month. On the night, a limited number of signed prints will be up for grabs, along with drinks and a selection of the best vinyl from the Reggae Roast DJ crew. The exhibition will then run until late March.
Luke says: “It’s a privilege to exhibit at G-SHOCK East. I’ve been a fan ever since school; I remember standing in awe of the boys wearing their G-SHOCKs. Now, realising the brand has this belief in my art and are offering me the store as a platform to do as I please, it’s a dream come true!”
Luke works with mediums including collage, screen-printing and object presentation, and ‘Quarter Lyfe Crisis’ documents London’s exotic and chaotic environment. It is the embodiment of the G-SHOCK mantra: never give up.
“Everyone is grafting, working to get by. It’s tough. Living on top, underneath and inside each others pockets - just trying to take it all in. It’s a full time job, but one worth having a punt at,” says Luke. “That’s the foundations for my show. It’s surviving and striving to be blessed in a flat in Lewisham. It’s exploring, collecting and celebrating the ever changing, multi-cultural fabric of daily life in the capital. It’s unpacking great quantities of delights from far and distant lands while also growing your own carrots in the rain. It’s putting on a brave face, looking after your nan and telling yourself you’re ‘Living The Dream’ - a quarter of the way through.”
Based in Art Hub Studios in South East London, Luke works with typography, screen-printing, photography and collage, and his clients include Phaidon Press, CLINK Hostels, Antic and Paul Rhodes.
The exhibition launches on Thursday 5th February, from 7pm at the G-SHOCK East Store, Brick Lane.
