The artworld constitutes a world in which one's belonging and existence is determined by one’s willingness (and unwillingness) to conform to a specific set of values, tastes and strategies in order to achieve a set of ambitious market-driven goals within this ecosystem. More often than not, strict guidelines set up by the so-called "gatekeepers" of culture either push artists to the margins through enforcing these conditions, or pressure them to comply with the prevailing mainstream sensibilities. In contemporary art, much like in fashion and music, there exists a natural tension between the mainstream and the periphery, where this tension often acts as a catalyst for innovation, experimentation and radical transformation. If there is still something like the avant-garde, it most likely does not exist in the centre of anything, but in the dusty corners of society and in the dingy sub-basements of culture. There, artists still congregate, converse and celebrate non-conformity and anti-establishment, the independence of free thought and unyielding and often non-consumable expression.

Périphérie is an exhibition that investigates this friction between the margins and classes of culture, between what is digestible and what is not. It is here where a new set of questions about responsibility, function and purpose of the arts are being asked but not always being answered. It is a chance to reconnect the dots between vast subgenres through different mediums, localities and [time] periods. The intention of this group exhibition is to rebuild and cement a common ground, a shared language and a bridge between underground cultures of France and the United States. Through a careful curation of independent artist books, rare zines, photography, sculpture, contemporary paintings and drawings, the aim of this exhibition is to highlight the relevance and necessity of artists raised on counter-culture dating back to the early 1970`s.

With daily public programming that includes book releases, lectures and performances the objective is to engage New York City's artistic community, as well as art lovers at large.

About BATT Coop:

Only two years old, Paris based, BATT Coop is dedicated to collecting, producing and cataloging artist’s books, which mostly circulate in small circuits, without any thematic or genre restrictions. From zine making to photography, from illustration to visual, technical or intellectual experimentation, BATT Coop champions all artistic practices related to print, beyond mere books. BATT Coop was created after discovering the lack of any place able to answer the expectations of the makers, publishers, lovers or collectors of this type of publications. Working both from the private archives collected by Galerie P38 and with the production power of the Paris Print Club (a printing studio using traditional printing methods), BATT Coop intends to bring an actual answer at the time of the atomization related to the new means of communication and to create a bridge between past and present through a contemporary approach to printmaking.
