Pupuruusu - Silja Kejonen & Outi Vuoriranta
Opening: Tuesday, May 21, 19-21h. Welcome-Willkommen

About

Pupuruusu (Bunnyrose) is a work between installation and painting. The work consists of Silja Kejonen’s watercolour
paintings and an installation and performance by Outi Vuoriranta.

Pupuruusu is about art canon, classic status and gender. We approach the subject through the figure of the bunny, especially through the bunny ears. Consepts closely related to the bunny or the rabbit are wisdom/foolishness, feminine/androgynous, sexuality/innocence. Sex appeal and girlishness are often projected into the bunny.

This formed the basis for a portrait series of bunny women. The portraits are a commentary of the art canon and the images of power. The second part of the work consists of an installation, where Outi Vuoriranta talks with roses. A rose is a rose only when it’s named a rose and not, for example, a cat. The work is a contrast to the controlled bunny portrayals. It examines power through naming and flowers. What does a rose really mean and what can you say with it?

Silja Kejonen (b. 1978) is an Oulu-based artist, dramaturge and writer. She has graduated from the Lahti Institute of Art and Theatre Academy Finland (department of dramaturgy). She has participated in several group and individual exhibitions since the late 1990s. Her first poetry collection Vihkilumen talo (Otava, 2017) was shortlisted for the Helsingin Sanomat literature award. She is currently working on three different exhibitions and her second poetry book.

Outi Vuoriranta (b. 1977) is a Helsinki-based free-lance actor. She has appeared in several tv series, short films and radio plays. She graduated from the Tampere University Degree Programme in Theather Arts in 1999. She has worked in theathers Avoimet Ovet, National Theather and Teatteri Telakka. Silja Kejonen and Outi Vuoriranta form an artistic partnership, building a feministic garden. In their work they examine the traces of shame and memories.

***

Silja Kejonen (geb.
