Join us for an interactive workshop with Kuwaiti visual artist Monira Al Qadiri in London on Monday 20 July.
About
According to the controversial Japanese writer Yukio Mishima an artist is not truthful to his art unless he himself 'becomes' it. Extreme as it may be, this idea to immerse oneself and embody artistic concepts with one's own body, mind and soul in search of real authenticity appears in the work of many Japanese artists, actors, dancers, writers, and thinkers. From the energetic GUTAI movement of the 1960s to the grotesque photographs of contemporary artists like Yasumasa Morimura and the long-standing social obsession with 'Cos-Play' (now fast becoming a world-wide phenomenon), what are the possibilities of imagining yourself as an art form? And how can we learn from this intense fixation on making and appreciating art?
In this workshop several videos and materials about these artists' works will be presented and participants asked to react in their own way to each of the methods. On conclusion the outcomes of the workshop will be posted on social media to create an online virtual exhibition with the hashtag#BecomingArt.
Admission free but RSVP required. Please email info@crossway-foundation.org to reserve your place.
