About

Eleanor Louise West (she/they) takes over the Stanley Social Cafe with an exhibition featuring never-before-seen work from the artist.
West’s work reflects on their own queer experience of coming out and finding community, using archive materials to highlight LGBTQIA+ milestones. Using textiles, printmaking, embroidery, cross-stitch and crochet, the artist creates soft works that hope to reach, support and educate the community.

The exhibition features a collection of pieces in a series based on the 1980’s civil defence guidance ‘Protect and Survive’. The artist uses motifs from the Cold War era to describe isolation and fear from the perspective of a young queer person. Supported by The Feminist Libary and The Rebel Dykes, the exhibition also houses a queer feminist response to the Greenham Common protest and the artists’ response to the ACT UP campaign group that was prominent in the American LGBTQIA+ rights movement in the same era.

Eleanor Louise West was born in Portsmouth in 1998. They studied Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts from 2016 to 2019. She now lives and works in South London. You can find more of their work at eleanor-west.format.com or connect with them on Instagram @tepidpaper to see works in progress.

This exhibition is free, and there will be a special evening workshop on Monday 21st from 7pm with drinks and food available to launch this artwork. However, the exhibition is open to the public every day from 10am-4pm, Monday 21st February – Friday 25th February.
