South Asian Muslims in Britain are faced with the issue of choosing between their Islamic faith and their Hindu influenced heritage.

About

Is there a possibility to negotiate and intertwine both elements of identity whilst growing up in Britain? Will one layer of identity have to be abandoned for the other to be achieved?

This workshop is inspired by traditional Bangladeshi quilts, Nakshi Kantha. Pre-made lino cutouts of Islamic/South Asian/British motifs will be used to create patterns on second hand fabrics that also link to the different elements of identity.

The main concept is the idea that community shapes and influences personal identity so hopefully this workshop can open conversations of your own personal experiences while we make a quilt from these printed patches that immortalises and is a homage to this topic.

This workshop is part of Dhaga’s ‘Sustainable Futures’ exhibition at FUSEBOX, Kingston. The exhibition will be open from 1-8 pm and the workshop will take place from 2.30-4 pm. Visit the main event page for details on other workshops & events happening throughout the day.
