About

Los Angeles-based video artist Rachel Mayeri has worked with primates for years, studying how they respond to different types of media and what genres - wildlife documentaries, hospital dramas, animation - interest them. Mayeri has now been commissioned by The Arts Catalyst to work with our closest primate cousin, the chimpanzee. Billed as the first movie made expressly for chimp moviegoers, we premiere her new film, Primate Cinema: Apes as Family, in which a young female as she befriends a wild group of foreigners; a Wizard of Oz for chimps. The film is made in collaboration with Edinburgh Zoo and comparative psychologist, Dr. Sarah-Jane Vick who studies chimpanzee cognition and behaviour, looking at aspects of personality and emotional expression and chimpanzees' similarities to us as social animals. Primate Cinema: Apes as Family has received financial support from a Wellcome Trust Arts Award and was filmed in the Budongo Trail at Edinburgh Zoo. Please note: AND is arranging a visit to Knowsley Safari Park where you will be able to debate with the artist. See our website for more info.
