A preview of new work by Hazel Soper, exploring Vegas, capitalism and gender stereotypes- every body and anybody is welcome, it would be great to see you there!
About
The work seeks to expose how the performative gender expectations that are perpetuated through our language, media and pop culture are physically damaging to women, through the connotations of wealth and glamour associated with Las Vegas. The piece investigates women’s roles within capitalism: the unrecognised household and emotional labour and how these established inequalities are increased by pressure from our connection to social media in the 21st century, and directed by violent gendered undercurrents. By the unavoidable internalisation of perfected representations women’s lives and bodies are commercialised; transforming speech, interests and photos into a curated brand voice which reinforces the pedestal from which we are then torn down.
