Pop-up exhibition exploring the uplifting and powerful messages of traditional union banners through embellished work wear and printmaking.
About
Sam Hobbs is currently studying on the Master of Fine Arts programme at The University of Brighton. The work you will see in this exhibition has been made over the course of one year. Sam takes uplifting and powerful messages found in traditional union banners, along with her experiences growing up in the North East of England, and makes connections with current issues facing working people across the UK.
As well as embellishing an original National Rail jacket and an old boiler suit, Sam has adapted present day workwear from different industries, highlighting concerns over fair pay and conditions. Working with traditional letterpress techniques, she has also produced a collection of A3 prints to show alongside these garments.
Sam will be in the gallery daily, working on a full-size banner that accompanies this project.
The gallery is open to UNISON staff and visitors. Individuals/ groups (max 15) interested in visiting the exhibition should contact Sam directly to arrange an appointment, or book via Eventbrite following the link.
