Portraits is a group exhibition exploring this genre from different perspectives. Including representation from Argentina, Austria, Germany, Poland, Portugal and the UK, the show presents works emphasizing a person’s likeness, personality, mood or even create an idealized figure. We are invited to discover what lies beyond the physical appearance and engage with the sitters in a unique way.
Anna Sokol feels comfortable creating a new world in her art, through which she communicates with the viewers. She has always been fascinated by human portrait, in particular portraits of women. She is interested in face and figure; they reveal emotions, feelings, experiences and personality. In her works, she is looking for the particular mood, also for interesting light - full of contrast that builds atmosphere. Valentine Louafi presents the "gold series" of majestic and iconic portraits of body modified men and women from worldwide tribes. Her will is to capture the essence and authenticity on a face, an expression, a sight, and create a cut out technique able to render the textures, like the scarified skin, or the hair. She would like the viewers to feel the ancestral wiseness and feel some sacred connections with these people, feel the cultures, while just observing how quiet and respectful they are. Maybe believe the utopic idea that we are all one and able to reach the universality in the diversity that lives in every being.
You are warmly welcome to join us for a drink with the artists at the opening night of PORTRAITS at The Brick Lane Gallery open from 6pm-8.30pm on Wednesday 6th July 2016.
