In celebration of CAST's first decade, we have lined the corridors of the building with photographic portraits of occupants past and present, including studio artists, former pupils and teachers.

About

The photographs were taken by Martin Howse – an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society who works with a medium format 6 x 7 camera. Martin was a member of the Helston Photographic Club when the building that is now CAST was a community centre and the club occupied the attic studio.

Martin’s interest in photographing artists started back in the 1980s. When CAST was formed he approached us about the idea of making portraits of artists who have studios in the building. The project started in 2017 and now comprises nearly thirty portraits of past and present studio holders, some of whom have been working in the building since the very beginning. This is not quite a complete record of everyone who has ever had a studio here, but it provides a very rich sample of the many artists who contribute to the creative life of this area of West Cornwall.

We also asked Martin if he could make photographs of former pupils and teachers from the building's past life as a school. We are delighted that a selection of these images is now on view together with pictures of the building's present occupants.
